Description

Sewing with Twin and Triple Needles opens up a wide range of practical and creative options, such as adding texture with pintucks or shade effects to translucent fabrics. You can also use these needles to add decorative seams to clothing and quilts or add creative hems, as well as to hide bending lines when letting down a seam.

Twin and Triple Needles consist of two or three needles, which are connected with a single shank by a bar. These needles also have a flat shank and, like individual needles, fit in any conventional sewing machine: the flat shank always points to the rear. The SCHMETZ needle range includes several Twin and Triple Needles in different types, needle sizes and needle spacing.

When to use which needle depends on your fabric and/or application field. SCHMETZ needle spacing is always shown in millimetres and the needle size in NM (number metric).

Be excited by the endless options offered by Twin and Triple Needles and give your creativity free reign.

Nearly all household sewing machines are capable to use Twin and Triple needles. Please follow the instructions below when sewing with Twin and Triple Needles:

  • Your machine should have a zigzag capability (with transversal hook) and a needle plate that has a hole wide enough for the needle. If you have different needle plates, use the zigzag stitch needle plate. Make sure to use also a zigzag foot with wide hole and not a straight stitch foot.
  • You use the same single bobbin, loaded as usual.
  • For each needle, you need a separate thread spool. More than one thread spool holder is required so that each needle has its own thread source. Most machines have a built-in option for a second thread spool. Usually, the sewing machine manual gives hints for operating the machine with twin or triple needles. If your machine does not have the option for a second or third thread spool, you could wind an additional bobbin and use it as thread spool on the same spool holder, making sure that bobbin and spool are unwinding the same direction. There are also additional thread stands available.
  • You can use the same thread colour for each needle or different colours for decorative effects.
  • Thread your machine with all needle threads as if they were one thread. Some machines have special separating possibilities, please follow your manual. Just above the needle, separate the threads on each side and thread each needle with its own thread. The automatic needle threader does not work with twin or triple needles.
  • Some machines come with an extra button for twin needles which limits the stitch width and avoids the selection of unsuitable stitches. This should be activated to prevent needle breakage. If your machine does not have this feature, be careful to use proper stitches. If you use decorative stitches, take care that the stitch width is adapted to the width of your twin or triple needle. Do the first stitches by turning the hand wheel carefully and check that the needles do not touch the presser foot or needle plate.
  • Usually, the tension has to be loosened to avoid arching of the seam.
